KC-ICON Bridge398 people have pledged $23,636 so far.

Let's Go KC is working with Kansas City, Missouri to fund a bicycle/pedestrian trail on the Paseo Bridge. We need to collect $100,000 in pledges to get a trail by 2011, otherwise the trail will not be built for many years! MoDOT will build it if the local community provides the money, and it will be cheaper and easier to do it now.

To meet our goal we need 5000 people to pledge only $20! There is no cash needed now. The money will be collected only if needed to build the ramps to the bicycle/pedestrian trail on the bridge.

As you know, the new Paseo Bridge is being built right now, with a predicted finish date of October 2011. We want a bicycle/pedestrian trail built by 2011 instead of waiting many years for this needed connection

Here's a little background:

Bicycle and pedestrian advocates have been working with MODOT, MId-America Regional Council and Kansas City MO for four years to get a bicycle/pedestrian trail on the Paseo Bridge. Through this process we have created a Regional River Crossing Policy that calls for a bicycle/pedestrian trail on the bridge and we have resolutions from two KCMO councils that support the trail.

MODOT has said they would build the trail by 2011 if the ramps to the trail were built by KCMO and other agencies. KCMO is committed to finding the funds now to build the ramps up to the trail on the bridge deck and they have received some federal funding that requires a 20 percent match. Your pledge supports the federal funding match requirement for Kansas City, MO. The City needs a total of $4.1 million to build the trail.

Why is a walking and bicycling trail on the Paseo Bridge important?

  • It will set a precedent on both sides of the State Line that will make it easier to get crossings on all future bridges over the Missouri and Kaw Rivers.
  • More people than ever want to walk and bicycle to save money, stay healthy and save the environment.
  • Thousands of people who need to cross the river, live and work within a 2 mile radius of the bridge.
  • We need to connect trails both north and south of the river especially when the KATY Trail gets here.
  • Bicycle/pedestrian bridge crossings are being used in many cities now, including St. Louis; Hermann, MO; Jefferson City, I-90 in Seattle, Omaha, Chicago, and Portland, OR to name a few. We should not be left out.
  • It will physically link the north and south halves of the city.
