What about walkable suburbs?

Our recent post about the walk score of the city and it’s neighborhoods was confined to KCMO.  And while only a few central city neighborhoods are places where one cane truly live car-free, there a still a few pockets of fairly walkable areas in the suburbs.  Not surprisingly, most in the more compact inner suburbs and the old Main Street or downtown areas.

Here is our own list of the most walkable places in suburbia.

Independence Square: 95
Lee’s Summit, Downtown: 88
Overland Park, Downtown: 86
KCK, Downtown: 83
Liberty Square: 82
Mission, Johnson Drive and Lamar: 80
Prairie Village, Tomahawk and Mission: 80
North Kansas City, Armour and Howell: 75

Note 1: Sidewalks… As far as I know, Walk Score does not take in account the condition of a city’s sidewalk network, or if it even has one.  So these scores might be much lower in places where sidewalks don’t exist.

Note 2: Grocery shopping… Most of these places don’t have a full-service grocery store, so a car is still necessary for some essential trips.  Only Lee’s Summit and Mission have a supermarket within half a mile of downtown. While Olathe’s downtown only scores 60, it does have two supermarkets. On the flip side, the Independence Square and North Kansas City both have all day and evening bus service, which puts grocery shopping within reasonably easy reach.
