Trails Instead of Sidewalks
Building trails in lieu of sidewalks along streets not only violates national transportation standards, it is dangerous and it puts bicyclists into harms’ way.
Dangerous side paths
While it might seem counterintuitive, bicycling on a side path is actually more dangerous than in the street. Data shows that it is one of the most dangerous places to bike. One reason is because motorists do not expect to see bicycles on a sidewalk, but the cyclist at increased risk for crashes cause by turning cars or cars coming out of driveways.

National standards
AASHTO is a national group of transportation officials that designs road standards. Their guidance is clear that trails should only be used in lieu of sidewalks in very rare situations.
On-street facilities like bike lanes or shared-use lanes are the standard. Trails should be built only where there is a dedicated corridor that minimizes conflicts between trail users and motorists.
